What exactly is “What the Cake?”

“What the Cake?” is a forward thinking coffee shop. What you find inside is a cupcake pastry shop, with vintage decor and a touch of kitsch (editors’ favorite!), a hipster pastry maker with a very prominent beard, cupcakes with sought after flavors, all located in Strasbourg city center. Sounds good? This place is ideal to hang out with friends, or simply geek alone enjoying pastries with abundant calories. All this to say that “What the cake?” has become a staple for home made, vegan, American inspired desert enthusiasts.

Not being big fans of cupcakes, we were rather skeptical about the sweet delights of “What The Cake?”. However, taking into account the positive opinions and our sense of sacrifice, we wanted to draw our own opinion. So we tested the three chocolates and rose-raspberry cupcakes, accompanied by a hot jasmine tea and a coffee. The verdict? The cupcakes are moist, fluffy and hyper fresh. We had a wonderful time in this charming place, a real outsider on the tea rooms market. We especially love the big bearded pastry chef Kevin’s staggered look, and this place “boudoir” decoration. You prefer salted treats?

For those who love salted pleasures, “What The Cake?” also offers wraps, salads, brunches (on Saturdays and the first Sunday of the month, upon reservation, for 18 €). You can chose either a vegan or a carnivorous brunch. Of course next time we will let ourselves tempted by one of these two formulas.
